HOW TO MAKE SOY WAX MELTS

I want to hug the one who created those flameless soybean wax melts that are everywhere today. I love candles but our house is almost entirely made of toothpicks so I’m always on the lookout for flame-free options to scent my home. You can simply place wax cubes in a heater to heat them (our heater is electric so there is no open flame). And when they melt, they smell like candles.

While they are not very expensive, you can make your own smelters to manage what happens inside them. The three-ingredient, paraffin-free soy wax melts contain only essential oils. You don’t have to worry about breathing in something cramped.

You don’t necessarily need many accessories to melt your wax.

Soy wax is my favorite because it’s non-toxic, easy to find at most craft shops, and affordable. They can also be made with paraffin wax (health) or beeswax (a bit more expensive). Because there is no open flame, the wax must melt at lower temperatures so I add oil. To increase the aromatherapy effect, I add different essential oils. You should choose cheap oils in large bottles to perfume the whole room. I like lemon, grapefruit and lavender oils, but go ahead and use what you prefer.

Materials

  • Silicon mold, small muffin pan or ice cube tray

  • 2 cups soy wax flakes

  • 1/4 A cup of almond or grape seed oil

  • 1-2 tablespoons of the essential oil of your choice

  • Glass jar 16 ounces old

  • In a small saucepan

  • Optional: clay, ground herbs or beet root powder for a natural color

Instructions

1. 1. Place the soy wax flakes into an old, heat-resistant glass container. Place the jar in the saucepan. Fill the pan with enough water to cover half of the jar.

2. Keep the wax in place on low heat for about 30 seconds.

3. Allow to cool on low heat for two minutes. Blend almond oil and essential oils. Even though 2 tablespoons of essential oils sounds like a lot, the wax might not be as fragrant. If necessary, add more oil. If you want to add color to your melts, do so now.

4. Allow the wax to cool in the mold.

5. Place 2 to 3 melts in the heater. Let the aroma fill your home as the melts.
